Saturday Storytime-Communication Errors

Susan Cwik

I love Saturday Story times! It’s so much fun to look over the past and remember those special moments in a customer facing job. These experiences are not limited to face-to-face interactions, but can also occur over the phone. With that in mind, keep reading for a most confusing phone call.

Phone rings.

Me, “Hello, this is Balanced You Natural Emporium.”

Man, “Is this Balanced You Natural Emporium?”

Me, “Yes it is.”

Man, “Do you have Apple Cider Vinegar pills?”

Me, “Yes, we do.”

Man, “How does it compare to the liquid?”

Me, “It’s really a personal preference. If you like the liquid and it works, I say stick with it. If not, you can try the capsules.”

Man, “So, you do have the pills?”

Me, -face palm-“Yes, yes, we do.” (sigh!)

This is perfect example of how conversations can be a totally one-way event. We all do this and, at times, the person on the receiving end can get very annoyed. It’s like, “Duh! We just said that, why aren’t you paying attention?!” It’s these types of conversations that remind me that true communication is a 2-way event. You can’t just talk at someone without listening; true communication is both talking and listening with intention.

Did you notice that I said, “talk AT someone?” This is the person who just seems to talk to hear their own voice. Some of these people have issues with understanding social cues, but, most, tend to just be self-absorbed. As someone who is trying to help these people, it becomes very difficult. I’ve learned that I just have to jump into the conversation, almost to the point of rudeness, to just ask a question. It’s like herding a cat (Oooo! A new metaphor.) trying to get them to go down the path of communication and comprehension without getting distracted.

So, as we begin this weekend, remember to turn your brain on just enough to pay attention to your conversations with others. Let’s put aside the distractions and focus on whoever we may be conversing with.

Until next time,

                Have a Healthy Day!!
